Everything You Need To Know About The Ingrown Nails

Your skin and nails are composed of a protein called keratin. When during growth, the dense layer of keratinized cells is pushed towards the tips of your fingers then your nails are formed. Ridges on your nails correspond to skin ridges underneath your nails. This helps to hold your nails in place. When the shape of your nails gets changed for some reason then your nail may grow outwards to the corner of your skin. This structure that outgrows is called an ingrown nail.

  • Biting your nails with your teeth.
  • Any injury.
  • Applying continuous pressure on your nails (especially in case of toenails).
  • Any fungal or bacterial infection.
  • Unhygienic condition.
  • Improper trimming or cutting of your nails.   

 Why do ingrown nails frequently happen to your toenail?

Toenails are more prone to pressure if you wearing tight shoes. This will squeeze your toenail enough and will allow it to change the shape of your nail in the applied direction especially if you wear tight shoes for a longer period of time.   

Everything You Need To Know About The Ingrown NailsHowever, ingrown fingernails do happen and they can become infected. This makes everyday tasks such as typing on a keyboard or doing the dishes painful. The ingrown nail can sometimes be extremely painful and needs to be treated properly.
